Churches grow and thrive when God’s Word is available in the local language. This truth has shaped literacy development for generations. The desire to engage with Scripture often sparks the desire to learn to read. However, in Africa today many children attend school in a dominant language, while the ability to read in their own mother tongue is neglected or undervalued.
At Little Zebra Books (LZB), we believe that reading in the language you understand best is the key to true comprehension. And what could be more important to comprehend than the Bible itself?
Scripture and literacy go hand in hand
From the beginning, LZB has been committed to creating beautiful books for children in African languages and stories that fit the cultural contexts and ministry goals. Communities have consistently asked for Scripture-based stories, and LZB has answered by publishing Bible stories that resonate locally.
Did you know that Bible translation projects often begin with the Gospels of Luke and Mark? These are rich in narrative — filled with Jesus’ life, ministry, and teaching. That’s why LZB deliberately publishes stories from these first portions of Scripture translated in new languages. This approach allows Bible translation projects to begin producing children’s materials early in the process, helping churches nurture a love for both reading and God’s Word.
The availability of God’s Word in local languages doesn’t just support faith — it also encourages literacy. Reading stories that matter to families, like the life and parables of Jesus, motivates children to read for meaning and builds reading fluency naturally.
Bringing Stories to Life
Illustrations play a central role in LZB books. They make stories come alive, helping children engage with the text no matter their reading level. Pictures paired with simple, accurate text support reading comprehension, fluency, and joy.
Access for All: Partnership with SIL and Bloom
One of the early challenges we faced was that communities often lacked the resources to print large numbers of books. To meet this need, LZB partnered with SIL through the Bloom platform, making our books freely available to download, translate, and adapt.
Through BloomLibrary.org, Little Zebra Books are now traveling far beyond Africa — reaching readers in Europe, Indonesia, and the Americas. What began as a small effort to provide the “best little books” for children in Africa has become a global source of children’s literature, including Bible stories.
What began as a small initiative is now part of something much larger — a growing movement to equip children with stories that matter most: stories that teach, inspire, and reveal the love of God.
Together We Reach More
Little Zebra Books is not working alone. We are grateful to partner with churches, schools, and community programmes who put children’s literacy development and church ministry at the heart of their work. Thanks to their dedication, thousands of children are now reading Bible stories in the language they understand best.
